Fire was everywhere. He ran onward and onward, as he had been doing for what seemed forever. Smoke came from every tree, every shrub of greenery, every little flaw on this earth. It had been a summer of dryness, all the time, no matter where Faraday lead his herd of two. The last few years had been tough on the brumbies, with the wild populations rapidly decreasing. The other three mares had been killed by the fire, and only Mirri was still here. He looked over his shoulder, nosing the mare and encouraging her. The two horses fell down to a limping walk, their hooves burning with every step. A sudden flare had the twosome shy, then jolt back into a half-hearted gallop. Fara felt Mirri's hot breath, on his shoulder, on to his rump, falling further behind him with every step. Running a few more paces, the air smelled of much needed water. To get Mirri there would be to save her. Faraday turned, only to see Mirri disappear inside a wall of flame. Her cry of pain and agony was enough to tell him all he needed to know. The flames wouldn't wait. He changed forwards once more, to the scent of water, to a place that smelled of life.
Faraday stepped forwards with the uttermost care, placing each hoof delicately into the water. There was a scent of human near...then a song like a bird's came from somewhere, echoing off the bush land surrounding him. Human bird song? It could be described as nothing else.

Faraday snuffed gently awake, to see his human reach her hand towards him. Twitching his muzzle and stuffing it into her outstretched hand for a treat, Day reflected on life so far.
Honestly, all was well.
His handler opened his stall, leading him outside for some early-morning grazing. Faraday walked forwards, his head down, only stopping when he crashed into Human. He shied slightly, looking up to see why she had stopped. A black mare on the horizon.Mirri?
